Cleopatra and the Tea Cup: Sam and Jerry

My phone buzzed with a text from Sam. It was the morning of her wedding she had messaged to tell me how excited she was and how pleased she was that I was a part of her and Jerry’s big day. I could hardly take in how thoughtful it was, but that is Sam from head to toe. I knew when I spent some time with this couple for their engagement shoot and family shoot up by Clifton Suspension Bridge back in the Spring, that I was going to be a part of something great, but I didn’t realise quite how grand.

Both Sam and Jerry were getting ready just around the corner in different rooms of the lovely boutique hotel The Berkeley Square. I have to say, when Sam stepped into her ‘Cleopatra’ Jenny Packham dress, she looked a dream. While I was busy with the girls, Jake caught Jerry’s pre-wedding hour, sharp as he was in his Reiss suit and no tie.

I do love details. From the gorgeous table décor to the Candy Banquet, this day was a beautiful mixture of things the bride had done herself and choice suppliers she had picked to create her dream. I was just so impressed, and, well, just so in love with this wedding, I have listed all the suppliers at the bottom of this post.

Sam and Jerry, you are beautiful. We love you both very much and wish you every happiness in everything that life brings you. Thank you so much, it was truly an honour to capture your day and your love.

Jake and I headed to Goldbrick House on Park Street in Bristol to catch the preparations. The very wonderful Vicky Rowe, who had put me in touch with Sam and Jerry, was there installing vintage details and china ready for the wedding. Sam had put a lot of thought in to her details, and well, oh! This was pretty much my dream wedding. It was vintage and chic, and effortlessly gorgeous from the aesthetics to the ambience.

Goldbrick House orchestrated the festivities beautifully. Following Sam and Jerry’s ceremony, they had a naming ceremony for their beautiful baby Isabella…and there was more than one tearful eye in the room.

After the meal when the light was getting to that perfect sweet stage we stole away for 20 minutes to get some portraits of the stunning couple just behind Goldbrick House. The location was fabulous really.

Chasing raindrops: Amy and David

Filled with anticipation, I knocked on their door. This would be the first time I met them. Usually I always meet my couples in person before they book, but Amy and David’s lives are so busy. It had taken us sometime to find a suitable occasion to meet for our consultation and pre-wedding shoot, and when the day came I had built up so much excitement, I was quite nervous.

I couldn’t have wished for a more genuine, loving and appreciative couple. We sat and talked at length about their plans, their family, sharing our experiences, and hopes and dreams.

Outside, it began to rain. None of this British drizzle (which incidentally I think is becoming rarer) but proper monsoon rain. And it didn’t stop. We decided to set out for a local pub and begin our pre-wedding shoot inside. Now here is the magic thing. When the rain didn’t stop, Amy and David were keen to brave the raindrops for some outside shots. It really was magic. Sure we got soaked, but there is something deeply romantic in these two, and it shines right through.

I am so honoured and excited to be documenting your wedding later this month. Thank you both for being so open and so much you.

Effortless Ria and proof you don’t have to always shoot an engagement outside. The use of the Cafe gave real intimacy to the images. RD

South Farm Wedding: Henry and Rachel

From the moment we arrived there was a buzz in the air. Some weddings gather momentum slowly, but this one had the excitement high from the very start. Henry and Rachel, who live in San Francisco, chose to have their wedding at South Farm, close to Cambridge where they met.

We had their engagement shoot at Kings college last December, in the snow, and one of the images was featured in The Times newspaper announcing their engagement just the day before the wedding. Today there was no snow. It was glorious, and the gardens were looking fine.

Documenting the bridal preparations was a joy – I was swept up in the bubbling anticipation and excitement of the six bridesmaids as they saw Rachel transform into the stunning bride who was to take Henry’s hand in the summer house, amongst the water lilies and warm summer air, in front of her American family and his English family and promise to be together forever.

Henry is crazy about Rachel. You can see it in all the little things he does, and the not so little. Two of Rachel’s dear friends from Phoenix were unable to make the wedding, so what does Henry do? He organises for them to skype in just after the meal, and whisks Rachel off to the very caring a meaningful surprise of being able to show them her gorgeous veil and share with them her thrill of being a new bride. That is love.

Henry and Rachel, I hope you had the most amazing time on your honeymoon, and hope you are settling into your life in California as husband and wife. It was a true honour to document your day. Jake and I wish you all the happiness in the world.

Brilliant!!

A little bit of Star-dust: Jasmine Star’s London workshop

I scanned down the list of Top 10 Wedding Photographers by American Photo Magazine, and my eyes rested on a slightly unusual name. It was 2009, my lunch break, and I was scoring the web again for wedding photographers…looking for inspiration. I clicked on the link, and almost immediately I was greeted by a pretty, smiley American girl, my age, telling me all about her loves, her dreams and her photography. I was quite taken aback, and, well, to be honest, I sort of ran away. It was like nothing my British eyes had seen before. But the following day, when 12.30 came round again I was drawn back…and then I discovered Jasmine Star’s blog, and over the next week I was hooked. And I was not the only one. Jasmine Star now has over 40,000 likes for her facebook page and over 30,000 followers on twitter.

My discovery of Kat Williams was a little more recent. Earlier this year, as a bride, looking for inspiration I found myself looking at wedding blogs, and Rock n’ Roll Bride stands as a fiercely independent voice for the uniquely beautiful. Kat herself, in cyberspace, is larger than life, uncompromising, appreciative and sharp.

So when that these two exceptional women were teaming up for Jasmine’s first ever UK workshop, I was going to have to be there.

Sometimes I still surprise myself how shy I can be. I thought that having had the wonderful opportunity to talk with Jasmine over skype when I interviewed her in January for The Photography Parlour would have lessened my nerves at the mixer on the night before the workshop. Kat had organised a meet in the roof top bar of The Sanctum Soho. Something about the combination of excitement and meeting so many of my peers who were full of enthusiasm and accomplishment left me a little tongue-tied. Until Jake reminded me to look out and not in. Don’t think about how others are perceiving you but instead ask, listen and learn. And I did, and I grew.

The workshop was one high-octane day. The venue, One Marylebone, was stunning. And I mean STUNNING. Tall leaded windows letting the light pour in to the high ceiling rooms, bathing the beautiful arrangements brought in for the afternoon shoot. We glimpsed these as we entered before sitting down for the morning’s seminar.

Jasmine gave the most informative, clear account of how she set up her business, focusing on branding and an open, honest account of things she learnt along the way. I have been asked since the workshop, as Jasmine has been so giving in her knowledge and experience both on her blog and in ventures with CreativeLIVE, how was the workshop different from what I had learnt previously from her? And I would say that her genuine willingness to answer any questions AT ALL, her poise, her real-ness (for want of a better word) and watching her in action, in real life, were incomparable.

Kat had brought together a talented team for a shoot with a genuine newly married couple, Rachel & Dan, who were so beautiful and so lovely (how lucky were we?). Jasmine demonstrated her shooting style, use of natural light and interaction, and then we, shy as we were, had a go and Jasmine gave her constructive input. And I learnt a lot, both from her and from my peers.

At this point I want to give a shout out to JD, Jasmine’s husband. He works with Jasmine and is the slightly quieter partner. Jake and I agree that he is rather great. We both had the opportunity to talk with him, and I really appreciated the sound advice he gave me.

I have been lucky enough to train with some of the best in the industry whom I admire greatly. And I have learnt a lot. A lot of different business models, different branding approaches, different shooting approaches, and different client care. Jasmine’s teaching gave me a much clearer understanding of what I want, what I think will work for me and more confidence, and that is such a gift to have been given.

I came away with a slightly different way of seeing and a slightly different way of being, a little bit of star dust that might just make all the difference.

I want to give an enormous thank you to everyone who was part of this incredible experience. Thank you!

Lovely write up Ria and beautiful photos, so funny reading about being nervous meeting your peers, this is how i felt yesterday meeting you, hence the over talkative mumbling person i was, LOL xx

Such lovely words Ria, but then I knew you’d do a fab job on that! The photos are beautiful too – particularly love the ones from below with the trees as backdrop – doesn’t look like inner city London! So great to meet you and speak soon no doubt! x

Ross Dean

Another beautifully written post Ria that uniquely captures your experiences. I’m sure Jasmine will be touched x

Wonderful write up Ria, and the photographs both of the couple and the behind the scenes (particularly love the one of Jasmine and JD!) are really beautiful! xx

Such a lovely looking and deftly written piece, well done.

Great write up, Ria! And your photos are gorgeous! Lovely to meet you!

Really enjoyed reading your feedback, Ria! Gutted I couldn’t attend the workshop, so hopefully next time. But totally agree with everything you’ve said. Jasmine’s blog helped me a lot when I was starting out, and reading her story made me believe I ‘can do it’ ))

you are far too sweet, ria! thank you SO much for coming out to the workshop and i can’t wait for our paths to cross again soon! :)

I love your blog voice Ria, so personable it’s like your talking directly to me. I looooove that one where Rachel is looking out the window with all the flowers around her .. so beautiful. It was so great to meet you and share the hotel with you Ria. I kinda have a little photographers crush on you now ;)

Great write-up and lovely images, both those you took of the beautiful couple and the very interesting behind-the-scenes ones. You deserve great things, and I know this star dust will enable you to get what you’re after. x

It was so nice to meet you Ria, can’t wait to meet up with you in Bristol soon. x

ahh! what a wonderful write up. made me smile

Well written Ria, so lovely to see you and be part of this wonderful experience! Love the photos! x
