Beside the Seaside: Jess & Andy

Jess and Andy love the winter. So naturally, with them getting married next December, we chose January to meet up and get to know each other better. I encouraged them to choose a meaningful location for their engagement shoot, and they chose Brighton. So on a cold and very bright January morning, Jake and I set off to meet them on the front.

Brighton is very dear to Jess and Andy. It is full of memories. They have spent much time there together playing the 2p slot machines on the pier and drinking milkshakes in the american diner on the front. Jess’s stunning engagement ring originated from Brighton, and was presented to her on a beach far away.

So on this day they were going to show us just how much fun could be had in Brighton. We started off in the american diner ‘JB’s’ drinking far too much peanut butter and banana milkshake before heading out on to the beach and walking amongst the seagulls and the waves.

There is something about the closeness of these two. Something inevitably consuming about how respectfully they regard each other, how much they enjoy the other’s company, their wicked sense of humour and undoubted love. It was a pure joy to spend a day in their company.

We played the arcade games, Jess won the most out of all of us without a doubt, it was really her lucky day! We ate fish and chips and we laughed. We captured the day in stills and also in stop motion (scroll down to the bottom of the post to see a different way of remembering the day).

Jess and Andy, this year is going to be an incredible year for you and I feel so blessed to have been able to spend time with you so much in advance of your wedding. You are wonderful people and I hope these images being back to you the moments of joy and love of that day in Brighton.

So beautiful.

Stop motion animation is a way of making a film from a series of stills. Jake, my second photographer and husband (not in that order), has a passion and aptitude for slightly more alternative ways of image making, and we have both been inspired by this method of late (you may have spotted the book blowing in the wind in a recent shoot that I did last summer). This is Jess and Andy’s engagement shoot in Brighton in stop motion, filmed by Jake, which I later edited and produced.

Loooove Brighton and love these photos! The stopmotion is so cute :)

Helen - January 29, 2012 - 6:13 pm

this is a stunning shoot – I just love the colours and settings, from bright stylish american-style diner to muted beach tones. And the stop motion is a joy. What’s the music?

Anna - January 28, 2012 - 11:39 pm

Ria, stunning, just stunning. Superb photos, and the stop motion is just great. That’s what I love about your photography Ria, it’s just so dynamic and you are always experimenting successfully with so many different methods, which makes every shoot so unique to each individual or couple. I also want to go visit Brighton again!

Aaron - January 28, 2012 - 10:30 am

Great job! That stop motion is superb, some of the angles (especially high up) give it that TS-E feel.

Jess & Andy - January 28, 2012 - 9:38 am

Ria and Jake, thank you so much! We are just thrilled with these beautiful photos, which are the perfect way to remember what was a fantastic day. We cannot wait to see the full album, and of course to have you both capture our wedding day in December. With love & many thanks, Jess & Andy x

Fly Away Bride: Henry and Rachel

This morning I am delighted to see Henry and Rachel’s wedding featured on the fabulous destination wedding photography blog Fly Away Bride. I was blowed over when the girls contacted me to let me know they loved my imagery and to ask if I had any destination weddings to share – destination for me or the couple. Immediately I thought of Henry and Rachel’s wedding at South Farm.

They both live in San Francisco, but had met at King’s College Cambridge where we did their engagement shoot. They flew over with a lot of friends and family to mark their union in a quintessentially English celebration, and it is just wonderful to see their beautiful day featured on FAB.

FAB also featured their snowy winter engagement shoot at King’s College, Cambridge, completing the story. Thank you so much to the girls at FAB and to Henry and Rachel for sharing their story.

Two Tickets to Adventure: Anna & Gwilym

For the last four years, Anna and Gwilym have been enduring a very long distance relationship between Edinburgh and Florida, succeeding in love where many others would falter. It is quite the love story.

Having both grown up with an insatiable appetite for the outdoors and adventure, they are cut from the same cloth. The proposal, a beautiful story in itself, spanned thousands of miles too. The question was popped, rather appropriately, whilst they were up a small mountain in Scotland, and the presentation of the ring (Anna’s great grandmother’s ancestral ring) was carried out in true romantic fashion on a small key nestled deep in Florida Bay.

Anna is a dear friend of ours, knowing Jake since their undergraduate years. I got to know Gwilym a little better when we did their beloved engagement shoot in Edinburgh last year. It was the very greatest honour to document the wedding celebrations which took place close to Anna’s parents home in the stunning Lake District. Jake was part of the bridal party, so you may spot him in the visual story below!

While Gwilym was quite the dashing groom, Anna’s beauty shone as she transformed from the outdoor-ready adventurer we know and love to a vision of elegance and poise in her stunning Ian Stuart gown with a striking bouquet of Narcissi – a nod to where Gwilym grew up, in Wales.

The ceremony took place The Holy Trinity Church in Brathay, a pictoresque church on a hill top, just like they have on the postcards. The church hall, at the bottom of the same hill has recently been lovingly and stunningly renovated, and Gwilym and Anna held post-ceremony nibbles and hot drinks for their guests there. Outside the church hall was an archetypal stone bridge of such splendor and elegance.  Gwilym’s father had arranged a little surprise for the couple of a game of Pooh Sticks with wooden battens baring their initials and the date, one of the most original and touching games I have ever seen played on a wedding day!

They held their reception at Merewood Country House Hotel, in keeping with elegance of the day. A quite breathtaking venue with views out over the valley to Lake Windermere, with some of the kindest staff I have ever met. The joining of two families was full of laughter and dancing, lots of beautiful food and meaningful details. The cake was made by Anna’s parents, once professional chefs – and decorated with the most beautiful pearlescent icing. The cheese was all from the Lake District or Wales, a nod to both their childhoods. The favours were handmade chocolates, made by the groom and his family, and every table bore little pearlescent snow flakes.

Thank you so much for your friendship. It is an honour and a joy to share these memories. We love you both very much and wish you every happiness.

Great shots Ria. This looks like such a cosy wedding. The rain has somehow made it even more beautiful. Gorgeous work. X

Beautifully captured memories. What a gorgeous wedding and location!

My favourite portrait is of the B&G from behind on the stone bridge – took my breath away! Then I absolutely adore the emotion in the b/w one of the bride on the grooms shoulder.

Truly stunning.

Ria, this is a truely stunning blog, thank you so much. You have a true gift; your photography and art is able to capture and express the people and events you are shooting in such a natural way, and that is why we love your style so much.

Your photo documentary of our perfect day was just…..perfect! You have captured it beautifully and we just can’t stop looking through our photo gallery remembering how happy we were and still are. This is so special to us especially having to endure another few more months of being apart before Gwilym and I begin our new adventure together! These photos are going to be so important to us to be able to look back and remind ourselves of what we have to look forward to for the rest of our lives together.

You and Jake are dear friends and we are just so happy that you were a part of our special day. All our love Anna & Gwilym xx

Gill maheu - January 11, 2012 - 8:20 pm

Gorgeous wedding Ria, love the shots.

The writer and the waves

Those of you who pass by here often, may remember me mentioning a certain science writer called Helen Scales. She was my very first bride, and has become a dear friend over the years. Helen wrote an acclaimed book called Poseidon’s Steed: The Story of Seahorses from Myth to Reality and regularly broadcasts on national radio, publishes podcasts and writes for key science blogs and magazines. She has a PhD from Cambridge (where we met), dives whenever she can, made my bridesmaid dresses by hand and has introduced me to some of my favorite music. Needless to say I am very fond of her.

Last summer, Helen was planning a redesign of her website and blog in to a single site, so we hatched a plan to do a beach shoot to provide new and fresh images to populate the pages. Helen and I had taken a few images once before for the author image which adorns the hardback version of her first book, but while being one of the most self-assured broadcasters I know, she was a little nervous about a whole shoot centered on her. I reassured her that it would be fun and that we would be in surroundings which made her most happy. So with that in mind, Jake, Helen and I jumped in to the car and headed for the west coast. I took us quite a while to find just the right spot of beach, deserted enough to give us the backdrop we wanted.

It was a perfect day, rolling clouds and a good strong breeze with aquamarine skies. A gift for this shoot indeed. We warmed up chatting and shooting. To put Helen at ease, I asked her questions and caught her reactions in the images – much in the same way I do when working with couples. It is such a reliable and fun way to capture people’s spirit, and I find it a much more natural way to work. In no time, Helen’s confidence was flowing and we caught some really fun cartwheeling action across the deserted landscape.

Helen had given me a brief for the shoot which showed her at work, writing in her trusty notebook that goes everywhere with her, and also portraits which captured her personality. She brought along a few other props, which are her trademarks for anyone who knows her well – her brightly coloured satchel and books. The bright splashes of colour against the subtle beach palette worked so well. She was also keen for some of the images to be processed with textures and cross-processed colours for a more retro feel. Below I share some of my favorite images from the day. I hope you enjoy them!

To accompany the launch of Helen Scales’s new site, we both thought we would blog about the shoot. See Helen’s version of the day here.

Jake caught this image of me photographing Helen in her element. It reminds me how much fun we had!  Be sure to check out Helen’s new site!

This looks great fun, and what dynamic photos you have taken Ria, truely wonderful. Love the retro style photos as well, it must be nice to do something slightly different.

Kirsten - January 9, 2012 - 3:51 pm

Oh Ria, I love these. And I have hair envy, Helen’s curls are amazing.

Helen - January 9, 2012 - 12:44 pm

It was such a fun day… wish we could go right back there now! Ria, it’s a privilege to get myself in front of your camera and to appear on your blog alongside all those beautiful brides. yes yes, let’s plan part II when it warms up… I want to show off my bicycle!

Tamara - January 9, 2012 - 12:20 pm

Really love these images. They capture Helen so brilliantly.

Well hello 2012. What a bright smile you have.

As new and even more exciting chapter begins in my life, I would like to pause and say thank you to 2011. The year that brought more change than many a year before.

2011 gave me a new husband, and new home and a new full-time career.  I began the year writing a list of goals for a year that I never saw coming. I look back at that list now, and it seems so tame compared with the events that took place, but I guess that having those goals written out freed me up to surpass them.

I began the year training to improve my photography in all the spare time I could grab from a demanding and full time job. I continued to run the content for The Photography Parlour, until its closure in August, and had the joy to interview Adam Alex, Chanelle Segerius-Bruce, Jesh de Rox, Jessica Claire, and Justin and Mary Marantz. I was privileged to train with Jesh de Rox, Jasmine Star, Dane Sanders and Adam Alex – some of the leaders in the wedding photography industry and people who change helped me develop in ways I couldn’t have imagined.

I met some incredible friends last year, dear people who have supported me through the changes that have taken place, and I particularly want to thank Ross, HelenTamara, Glen and Nicki, Vicky and Sam and Debs. You are all very special to me.

The support and love of my then fiancé, and a twist of events that gave him a perfectly suited new job in Oxford compelled me to make choices about my career and put in motion the series of event that led me to go full time with my wedding photography business, which I have had since 2008.

The day of our wedding became the first official day of my new full time pursuit, and I relished putting photographer as my occupation on the marriage certificate. Our wedding was the most perfect day, surrounded by our very dearest loved ones, and will forever define that year. I cannot wait to share images from our day, and will do so very soon.

In the few short months since our wedding day, I have been so excited to have the weddings of some of 2011’s couples featured in You & Your Wedding Magazine and the top UK wedding blogs Rock n’ Roll Bride and Love My Dress. I couldn’t have imagined I would have achieved this last January.

I have to thank all the couples that in 2011 chose me to document their weddings. Kate and Dominic, Louise and Nick, Jillian and Phil, Claire and Guy, Gemma and Matt, Sam and Jerry, Henry and Rachel, Nicola and Scott, Amy and David, Jo and Keith, Ceri and Terry and Anna and Gwilym, I love you all dearly and feel greatly honored to have been witness of your love and for you to have chosen me to capture your memories for years to come. You have each taught me something different and changed my life in some small but truly significant way.

So to look forward to this great new year of twenty twelve. I am thrilled to get to know my dear couples who will be married before the year is out. I am overjoyed to be submerged in a career I am so passionate about.

Being full time will allow me to do all the things I have been longing to do: expanding my business service, enhancing the experience and looking after my couples on a whole new level; development of and unique products to display images in the most beautiful way; refine and define the art of my capture to be evermore unique to me and evocative of the event.

I am very excited for the adventure 2012 will become, hopefully with more work-life balance, and a whole lot of advance in my service and skill – for me the journey, and the strive for improvement (dare I say perfection) will always drive me.

Finally, to my dear husband. Thank you for your support, for encouraging me to pursue my dreams, for being with me every step of the way. Last year was a roller-coaster and we made it through and enjoyed the ride like no other, but I cannot wait for this year with you. You are my best friend and I am a much better version of myself with you beside me. Being married to you is the very best feeling – I feel calmer and stronger than ever, and I love you so very much.

Here’s to what will be a fabulous year.

Ross Dean - January 3, 2012 - 8:54 pm

Wow! What a year huh?

I’m so very proud of you and the steps taken over the past year in order to fulfil your dreams. Tanja and I were also honoured to be able to share your gorgeous wedding day with you guys and in Jake you really have found a real gem.

But next year is going to be even more awesome, as you continue to raise the bar (as I know you will).

Still got your back,

RD x
